Every year, millions of children and adolescents across the United States are victimized and exposed to violence in their homes and communities, and often suffer severe long-term emotional and physical consequences.
A teenage lesbian's effort to bring her girlfriend to her high school prom got a rather strong response from school officials. Eighteen-year-old Constance Mc Millen told her school, Itawamba Agricultural High School in northern Mississippi, that she wanted to bring her female date after a memo was sent out last month specifying the rules for the prom, which specified dates must be of the opposite sex.
Mc Millen had hoped to attend, garbed in a tuxedo, with her unnamed gal pal.
"However, at this time, we feel that it is in the best interest of the Itawamba County School District, after taking into consideration the education, safety and well-being of our students." Mc Millen, meanwhile, fears some will blame her.
"A bunch of kids at school are really going to hate me for this, so in a way it's really retaliation," Mc Millen told The Clarion-Ledger.
It is our responsibility to address this serious issue and protect our children.
